2018 AERA
Last Year's AERA April 2018 Off-Site
Celebratory dinner: Sonia Rosen, Sarah Hobson, Van Lac, Jerusha O'Conner, John RogersMark Warren's new collaborative book: Lift Us Up Don't Push Us Out!The student-led presentations (Lyons, Harvest) taught us about restorative justice, students as teachers, and reminded us that schools can be places where justice and hope can live. |
URBAN education offsite event in New York City at City as SchoolEvent Description: This Off-Site Session was organized by AERA members who are also members of the URBAN Research Based Action Network an organization intent on integrating community-engaged research into education and academic disciplines.
There was a panel of administrators, teachers, and students from NYC Human Rights schools and the NYC Coalition for Educational Justice, a citywide parent-led organizing movement for educational equity and excellence. We heard from the Educational Video Center which prides itself on its more than 30 years of student-centered, social-justice documentary making. After the panel, there will be breakout discussions with the audience. Our goal for the session was to learn with our panelists about specific human rights and culturally relevant principles that center the identities, cultures, and languages of teachers and students in equitable educational spaces. This session features a NYC-based educational coalition model which could be expanded and replicated throughout the country. |
